ABOUT THE PRODUCT

Discover Maraş 18 walnuts.

Maraş 18 is a registered Turkish walnut variety developed by selecting among local walnuts in Kahramanmaraş. It stands out for its large nuts and full, pale kernels. Its distinctive flavour and kernels that separate easily from the shell make it a popular choice for those seeking quality in-shell walnuts.

Following research begun at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University in 1994, it was registered in 2009 and included in the national variety list.

One of Maraş 18’s notable features is its high kernel yield. A study of the variety measured an average in-shell nut weight of 14.62 grams and a kernel percentage of 53.76%. This corresponds to approximately 540 grams of kernels per kilogram of in-shell walnuts. Nut size and kernel yield may vary with growing conditions, orchard care and harvest year.

With its pale, full kernels and halves that separate easily from the shell, Maraş 18 is well suited to shelling in large pieces. Alongside everyday eating, it can be enjoyed at breakfast and used in desserts, baking and recipes where the appearance of the walnut kernels matters.

Maraş 18 was developed through selection breeding. Walnut trees in the Kahramanmaraş region were examined, and desirable fruit quality and yield characteristics were selected to develop this Turkish variety. Grafting is used to propagate it while preserving its characteristics. Trees grown from seed may not reproduce the parent tree’s fruit characteristics exactly.
